Pro bono and paid legal representation

Sneep Advocaten will always try to assist you under the Dutch subsidized legal aid system, and in some cases even offer completely free legal support, also known as "pro bono". Whether you qualify for subsidized legal aid depends on various factors, including the nature and seriousness of the case, as well as your income and assets in the so-called "reference year" - usually two years prior to the year of your application. If you are deprived of your liberty, for example through pre-trial detention, different legal rules and conditions apply. Your application is assessed by the Legal Aid Board (Raad voor Rechtsbijstand) - an independent public institution over which Sneep Advocaten has no influence. If you meet the criteria for subsidized legal aid, you must take into account a mandatory personal contribution, the amount of which is reviewed and adjusted annually by the government.

If you do not qualify for subsidized legal aid due to your personal circumstances or the legal nature of your case, you are responsible for covering your legal costs privately. Sneep Advocaten will then issue an advance invoice, which will be determined in consultation with you, taking into account multiple case-specific factors. The hourly rate varies - depending on the lawyer handling your matter - from €205 to €325 net, excluding 6% office surcharge and 21% VAT. Depending on the complexity of the case, we may agree on additional conditions regarding a fixed or maximum fee structure. You always have the right to review a detailed breakdown of the time and expenses that underlie your invoice. If your case ends in acquittal, the law provides the opportunity to file a free request for reimbursement of legal costs with the Ministry of Justice. Sneep Advocaten will take care of this process for you.
